What OilHive Data Will Tell Us
OilHive is building a real-world database of oil change intervals, fuel economy logs, and engine feeling ratings. Here is a preview of the insights we plan to publish as data accumulates.
Every time a rider logs an oil change on OilHive, a small but meaningful data point joins our growing dataset. Multiply that across hundreds of motorcycles, dozens of oil brands, and thousands of kilometres of real-world riding — and patterns start to emerge that no laboratory test can replicate.
What We Are Building
OilHive tracks three core signals for each vehicle:
- Oil change records — brand, viscosity grade, mileage at change, interval since last change
- Fuel economy logs — litres consumed, distance covered, riding conditions
- Feeling ratings — rider-assessed scores for engine sound, vibration, shift quality, and acceleration, recorded at specific mileage points
Together, these signals let us ask questions that matter: Does a particular 10W-40 oil maintain engine feel longer than a competing brand at the same price point? Do shorter oil change intervals correlate with better fuel economy for high-revving engines? How quickly do feeling ratings degrade as an oil ages?
The Insights We Plan to Publish
As data accumulates, we will publish analysis covering:
Oil degradation curves — How rider-reported feeling scores change from km 0 to km 5,000 on a fresh oil fill, segmented by oil type and engine displacement.
Brand comparisons — Head-to-head comparisons of popular oil brands based on real change intervals and feeling data from the OilHive community.
Fuel economy trends — Seasonal and mileage-based patterns in fuel consumption across common motorcycle categories.
Maintenance interval analysis — Whether manufacturers' recommended change intervals align with what the data actually shows about oil condition over time.
A Note on Methodology
All data is anonymised and aggregated. We will be transparent about sample sizes, confidence intervals, and the limitations of self-reported data. Our goal is useful signal, not misleading precision.
This is the first post in what will become a regular series. Check back as the dataset grows.
